| NEWS: Because I follow these things... |

Porn site / mag Unzipped has been giving out their "Unzippy Awards" to various categories in the porn world. One of those cats was "Best Porn Star Vampire."
The competition was um... stiff, leading to two runners up and one winner: Cameron Marshall, who got umm... pierced by Diesel Washington in the pages of that very same mag. I can't speak for the competition, but with film names like "Count Cokula" and "Twinkblood," I'm sure the title was umm... hard-earned.
Let me just close here by saying you have no idea how it warms my heart to see two great tastes of mine tasting great together.

| NEWS: Free TV is dying and you bastards killed it |

Not that I was ever a huge fan of Free-TV. It always kept the naughty bits covered and censored language that even my Granny found acceptable (you haven't lived until you've been cussed out by an 87-year old gypsy. Love ya, Granny Goodness!) But it did give us things like BUFFY, ANGEL and the original STAR TREK, so it wasn't all bad.
But now that much of the best TV has moved to cable networks and pay stations, over-the-air networks are dying. Their ad revenue is plunging and the audience is fragmenting, between video games, SyFy Channel and the endless joys of <strike>X</strike> YouTube. Broadcast networks have been trying to recoup those losses by getting cable systems like Time Warner and Cox Communications to pay them for carrying their shows, with similar agreements to the ones worked out for USA or SyFy. But unlike those channels, the networks also have to split the revenues from such activities with the local affiliate TV groups, meaning a small pie is cut even smaller. The networks want more money for carrying their feeds and the cable conglomerates are balking at the pressure.
This is coming to a head on Friday, New Year's Day, when Time-Warner is threatening to drop Fox from its lineup over the pay dispute. Negotiating tactic or not, there's a real likelihood that many people could be without access to FRINGE come 2010. Sure, we can watch it on Hulu, but that just illustrates how much things have changed.
It's looking more and more likely that the TV landscape of the next few years is going to be quite different than today. You are going to pay for your TV in ways you never did before. My only real thought on the matter is how I can profit from all of this -- which is my usual answer to everything.

| PREVIEWS: DORIAN GRAY is Gay. Yea! |
Oh, Oscar, you cheeky bastard, you.
Thank heavens you provided such wonderful source material that could be made into a lush and lavish modern movie, showcasing the always edible Ben Barnes rewarding a painter with the best bit of patronage he -- and we -- could hope for.
The clip below is from the upcoming DORIAN GRAY, from the celebrated Oscar Wilde novel. It's bit fantastical and horrific, chronicling the corruptions of the flesh and the desire to stay young and beautiful forever. (I've never quite understood why any of that is wrong.)
This version already looks better than 2007's take on the film, which was a mishmash of styles and stylings that never amounted to much. In that movie, David Gallagher tried to get past his cute-tyke persona by playing the omnisexual Gray, but the film never went anywhere significant. It wound up a mess of murdered ideas and still born imagery, crushed under a terrible script.

| NEWS: More STARGATE: UNIVERSE On The Way |

While you were having fun this weekend, SyFy announced the renewal Of STARGATE: UNIVERSE. The freshman show, a different take on the Stargate premise, has been doing okay numbers on its intitial outings but gangbuster numbers once the DVR totals are added in.
For me, the first episodes have been hit-or-miss. They've only shown half a season, and it usually takes at least that for a show to find its legs. For me, dramatically, I'm still not sure the show "works." I get what they are trying to do -- approaching the entire Stargate mythos from a far more realistic base -- but it seems like they are still neither fish nor fowl. They have elements of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and the original STARGATE in the new show, but it doesn't always work.
Until the bitter end, BSG was pretty much able to mix darkness, adventure, social commentary, and SF extravaganza successfully. Sure the show was dark, but it compellingly so. You wondered what the hell was going to happen each week -- and what you might find yourself doing in the same situation. (Tom Zerek was right!)
SGU still hasn't reached that point yet. Part of the problem is that it looks like they have a mandate to be more like BSG but without being as BSG as BSG was. To be dark without being too dark and adventuresome without being as frothy and fun as STARGATE was. They achieved that with "Time," but I don't think they've done that as well with the other episodes, even the recent midseason finale.
Part of the problem with mix has been the Earth episodes, where the characters have been able to return home briefly in a body-swap program. This could be interesting -- indeed it was when it showed us one of the best depictions of a gay relationship, that of Camile Wray and her partner -- but, so often, its felt like soap opera hysterics and 90210 melodrama rather than the interesting reflection on loss and separation it was intended to be.
Unlike many, I haven't turned the show off. I watch this stuff to understand what works and what doesn't. You can see the production team struggling to get everything working right, so I hold out hope that by this time next year the midseason break will leave me just as eager for the next episode as BSG -- and even SG -- did.

| GAMES: DRAGON AGE: ORIGINS for Mac |

So after all this doorQ love of DRAGON AGE: ORIGINS, if you don't own a 360 or a PC, you might feel left out. Note, I still love you. I'd love you even more if you showed up naked on my doorstep with some rum and Coke. But, I digress....
Now, for those of you Mac owners, BioWare and Transgaming have ported DA:O to your platform. It'll be out just in time for Xmas, meaning you can slay Arch Demons and romance gay elves with the best of your console buddies.
Sorry, PS3ers. Still no DA:O love for you. I do love you, though. See my comment above about how I'd love you even more.

| PREVIEWS: Sam Worthington uses his sword to get head |
The CLASH OF THE TITANS one-sheet is out. Sam Worthington plays Perseus, hero of Greece and slayer of, well, Titans. According to Warner Brothers: "Born of a god but raised as a man, Perseus (Sam Worthington) is helpless to save his family from Hades (Ralph Fiennes), vengeful god of the underworld. With nothing left to lose, Perseus volunteers to lead a dangerous mission to defeat Hades before he can seize power from Zeus (Liam Neeson) and unleash hell on earth. Leading a daring band of warriors, Perseus sets off on a perilous journey deep into forbidden worlds. Battling unholy demons and fearsome beasts, he will only survive if he can accept his power as a god, defy his fate and create his own destiny." "Battling unholy demons and fearsome beasts, he will only survive if he can accept his power as a god, defy his fate and create his own destiny." That sounds like a night out at my favorite bar. | VIDEO: A couple of cute guys talk about a couple of cute shows |

Joshua Jackson and Ian Somerhalder. The names drip off of your...tongue. They are part of the thrill of watching the shenanigans on FRINGE week in and week out, and the vampiric violence of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES each and every Thursday night. Makes my week. (So does drinking, handcuffs and jetskis, but that's another blog.) Here's Joshua talking about what to expect in some upcoming episodes of FRINGE. Don't you just want to run your fingers through the fringe of his stubble?
And here's Ian "My Eyes! My Eyes!" Somerhalder, discussing VD (that's my pet name for the show. I'll leave it to you to figure out why) and some LOST spoilers.
Gawd, I love being a doorQ! |
