MASS EFFECT 2: The 2million copy game

Two million units. That's the number of MASS EFFECT 2 video games EA / BioWare moved in the first week. Less than the first week, actually, according to CVG.Com.

BioWare is incredibly pleased with itself, especially given the high scores the game has received across the board. I'm giving it a high score, too. If I could see. I'm bleary eyed. I don't think I've ever played a game so deeply and intensely as I have this one -- and I'm still not done yet.  I'm teaching on-line today, and wouldn't you know it, I'd rather be playing the video game. I gotta get to the end. I need my life back.

Note, it's possible that the numbers are slightly inflated. EA is reporting the sales figures from their internal accounting methods. It'll be a while until outside sources are able to confirm the numbers. I'm inclined to believe them that this was a big seller. It really is a great achievement in interactive entertainment.  If you are a SF fan and  haven't played yet, find a friend with an Xbox 360, camp out on their sofa, and start playing.

Just remember to bathe.

UPDATE: Metacritic breaks down all of the reviews from across the interwebs for the game. It's amazing how well this thing scored and how consistent the praise is. (All the more reason to be slightly upset that there are no m/m romances in the game.) Click on: Mass Effect 2: Inside the Reviews - Metacritic

PREVIEWS: Chris Evans caught with his pants down -- again.

Ever notice how Chris Evans always manages to lose his pants in just about every movie he's appeared in?

I could be exaggerating a little bit, but when I saw the trailer for THE LOSERS, the latest comic-to-screen adaptation (though one that looks kinda fun), once again we have a seen where the E-man is discovered all but  nude.

Watch the trailer below and you'll see what I mean.

I gotta just be reading too much into this, right?

THE LOSERS opens April 9th.

NEWS: John Barrowman is moving to America. Sorta.

John Barrowman has bought a house on Wiseteria Lane.

The immortal TORCHWOOD hero, rumored to be a part of the Fox TV reboot of the show, has signed to do a guest stint on DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. He'll be a big-time villain, mixing it up with the regular cast over a multi series arc.

According to Airlockalpha, HOUSEWIVES creator Marc Cherry is a big fan of TORCHWOOD and personally recruited for Barrowman to be on the show. Look for him to appear at towards the end of the season.

PREVIEWS: CAPRICA returns and DOLLHOUSE departs... all tonight

Tonight is the big return of CAPRICA, the BSG spin-off set 50-years before the Fall of The Colonies, and the farewell episode of DOLLHOUSE, the Joss Whedon thriller about mind-wipes and imported personalities. Sure, I know that CAPRICA had it's premiere last week, but since several million people had already seen the pilot, there was no real way to determine how the new series is going to do on a weekly basis. Tonight's the proof of the pudding, where we see if people love what the Powers-That-Be are selling or if the bitterness, the caveat emptor in light of the BSG series finale, turns people away. I'm hoping not. I liked what I saw of CAPRICA. I think it'll be a fun series, a must TIVO every week.

Also tonight, we get the series finale of DOLLHOUSE. The show has had a rocky road over the last two years. An interesting premise that seemed to have been fraked up in the development of the first six episodes, the series came to life once the Powers at Fox stepped away and let Whedon & Co. do their zanny best. I like the direction they took the series, especially this season. When Fox dropped the hammer the middle of the year and told the team to wrap up the storylines, the writers went ape-shit and took us down paths we didn't see coming -- but which totally made sense. We see how everything turns out tonight, flashing forward ten years into the future from the faux-finale of a few weeks back.  How will it all end? with a whimper or a bang? (I'm guessing a bang.)

I may have to put down MASS EFFECT 2 for a while and watch these eps live....

MASS EFFECT 2: Guys (still) can't frak like girls can

After DRAGON AGE: ORIGINS, my one big complaint about ME2 is that there is still no possibility of m/m romance in the game. I'm going by other reports because I haven't reached that point yet, but there aren't any opportunities for a male avatar of the hero to romance male NPC in the game.

Now, there's a pretty extensive f/f bit of romancing, foreplay and post-coital bliss. Take a look at the scene below and you'll see what I mean.

With the prior game, the male writers of ME are on record as saying they were uncomfortable writing male-male love scenes but had no problem creating ones for female. I'm assuming the same thing happened here, with a similar group of hetero-guys not quite able to get their head around the fact that gay guys fall in love, too. I imagine it's part of that whole stereotype that there aren't any gay SF fans. Ridiculous on its face.

I'm apparently not the only one miffed about this. If you check out the forums on the BioWare Social Network, you'll see variations on - "why no gay relationships"  thread posted time after time. With the great work that BioWare did with DA:O in including (a slightly sterotypical) gay romance, it's a blemish on an otherwise wonderful game that they didn't include such an option here.

The improvements to MASS EFFECT 2 over the first game came, in part, from complaints lodged on the forums of BioWare. They read and listened and, as a result, made much better game than the first time around. I'm hoping that they'll listen to the forums again and, when designing ME3, they include the possibility for guy-guy romance there.

PREVIEWS: SyFy shows off more CAPRICA

"What do you mean my daughter had a hottie boyfriend?"

Gotta suck to discover that your daughter's boyfriend turns out to be on the government watch list of possible terrorists. It would make my day suck. It obviously does that to Amanda Grayson, in this scene from Friday's CAPRICA.

I really encourage people to watch it. It's a fun series, even with the specter of Final Episode Epic Fail hanging over its head.

MASS EFFECT 2: Damn it's good

So I haven't had as much time to play as I'd like. I had so much to do yesterday that I finally didn't get around to playing until about 8PM. Then I was up till 2 investigating the latest galaxy spanning mystery and sending my bad-ass-with-a-heart-of-gold Shepard out to kick ass and take names and promptly lose said names, because all he cares about is kicking ass.

From what I've played, it's damn fun. You actually do walk into the middle of a SF movie, finding yourself the star in a constantly evolving, constantly branching tale of intrigue, mystery and daring-doo.

A lot of the RPG inventory elements have been stripped out of this version. Having just gotten done playing DRAGON AGE: ORIGINS, it's interesting to see the evolution of the game away from micromanaging every aspect of my team. I popped in the old MASS EFFECT 1 to remind myself of just how cumbersome the old system was. It was fun to mix and match several different add-ons and equipment to my gear to get slightly different effects in the game. Less could have been more. This time around it is.

I'm looking forward to getting to the heart of the central story in this game. I bought the companion walkthrough book, but have been careful not to read ahead, lest I spoil that mystery. I'm curious to see how they're able to pull everything off. If the writing holds up to what I've seen so far, it's going to get an even ranking from me than it has now.

Anyone picked it up yet? Let me know your thoughts below.

TECH: Apple invents the PADD

Captain Picard must be envious.

Steve Jobs released the iPad today, the new tablet PC device from the visionaries at Apple. When I first read the specs and saw the layout, I was a bit puzzled. It didn't seem like a super-revolutionary device. The drive is a little small, there's no camera and it does what other systems are already able to do. Then I saw the video of the device in action and I knew we'd just been kicked into that Star Trek future.

Most of us have watched Kirk or Janeway or Picard use a PADD, one of the ubiquitous flat panel devices on Trek to retrieve information, show a picture, or play video. It did it fairly instantaneously too, with a touch of a button. The iPad removes the need even for the button.

The video below is from Engadget. It's hands on with the device. You can see just how fast applications respond to touches. They load quick, they move quick, they do quick. The video playback looks funky, the picture display is amazing and the book reader is like having an electronic paper in the palm of your hands. It's an information device, through and through, capable of displaying anything and everything.

Sure, there are still bugs and limitations. Some of the criticisms, like the lack of a camera, or the price to connect to a 3G system, are good notes. The thing is, unlike existing tablets, even existing e-readers, this pulls technology and software together in one spot, with an easy interface for the most technophobic to use, and with the power under the hood to truly revolutionize the way information is presented, packaged and retrieved.

Yeah, I'm an Apple fanboy, so that does bias me a bit. But I'm looking at what happened with iPhone when the iTunes store launched. From a handful of apps we now have tens of thousands, everything from games to story board programs. 3rd parties have created attachments that turn the iPhone into the equivalent of tricorders, with adapted sensors for certain products. Jobs created the platform and people took it to new heights. The same thing is going to happen here.

The limitations on the device are going to slowly meltaway with each iteration. (Flash will either be enabled or HTML 5 will drive a stake through Adobe's heart.) The cost is going to drop, the power is going to increase, and people are going to invent not just new applications for the device, but new ways of presenting things like books as well. It won't be that long before the digital paper of CAPRICA becomes commonplace as well.

This is another one of those turning points -- I at least think so. The curve might be a little steeper than with prior products, but this isn't a Cube or an AppleTV. This is a foundation for a new way of doing things. The future, now in our hands.

MASS EFFECT 2: The Reviews Are In

Cthulhu, it's only like 3 hours and 15 minutes until MASS EFFECT 2 is released. Yipee! But in all this craziness, I realized today I'm getting older. A few years ago, I'd already be in line for the midnight release, waiting with my geeky brothers and sisters to pick up the game the moment I was legally able to. Now?

Frak that. It's midnight. Stand in line at midnight? You have to be kidding me. It's cold, even in LA, at midnight.

My Xbox is perfectly content to stream Netflix movies at that hour. I'm perfectly content to stretch out on the sofa, laptop on lap, watching said stream, while I also finish grading papers, outlining stories or working on something for doorQ.com.

But tomorrow....

The reviews for ME2 have been pretty uniformly excellent. Official Xbox Magazine gave it a 95%. IGN ranked it 9.6/10 (or 96%....) while  NowGamer gave it at 9.8/10 (can I get a 98%?) The overall trend at Metacritic.com is 96%, which is pretty damn good. The real test will be tomorrow, when everyone and their cousin Shub-Niggurath sign on and add their mewings and vexations to the scores. I'm curious to see how Those Who've Never Known The Touch of The Sun respond to the changes.

I'm curious to see how close it is to playing inside a movie, in the sense of how well the environment becomes immersive, self-directive but still so cinematic that you are sure you are in a movie -- and more. I told my friends that ME1 was like playing inside of a novel. You still had to fill in many of the details like you do when you read a book, but overall it was a huge step forward. This time, if you feel like you are in a movie, with yourself as the star, we'll have another piece of the future in our hands.

Is it midnight yet?

IMAGES: A little of CONAN's Jason Momoa Love for your week

It's Sunday and I thought I'd be a good idea to send everyone off into the week with the sunkissed visage of  newly cast CONAN: THE BARBARIAN hunk Jason Momoa from back in his twink / BAYWATCH days.

If you wan't to see what Momoa looks like in a loincloth or ever stopped to consider what he looks like when he gets lei-ed, this is the post for you.

TALKBACK: CAPRICA, SPARTACUS, and LEGION

It was an interesting weekend for doorQiness. On Friday, SyFy gave us the brand new CAPRICA TV series, a pretty interesting exercise in world building life before the Cylons attacked and the remains of humanity fled across the stars in the Galactica. A couple of you expressed that you weren't going to watch it after the end game of the original series. For those of you who did watch it, what did you think?

There were other choices that night. The Haiti telethon was everywhere. It raised a reported $58 million for charity -- completely awesome. But you also might have found yourself wanting to get a bit bloody, as Starz' "SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND" premiered.  For me, it was all over the place. The eye candy was great but the dialogue was pretty awful. And the violence was so cartoony; I laughed when one of the gladiators got his legs chopped off.  Did anyone else catch it? What did you think.

And then there was LEGION.

Here are some caps from SPARTACUS, courtesy of Superherofan.Net. More at the link (NSFW).

NEWS: Belgian TV Pop Star Cast in JUDAS KISS, alongside Charlie David and Brent Corrigan

Digital auditions via IMDb, Facebook and Skype facilitated the cross-Atlantic casting of Belgian star Timo Descamps.

LOS ANGELES -- Rising European actor, television host and pop singer Timo Descamps has been cast in the time-bending campus drama, "Judas Kiss," the film's producers announced today.

The 23-year-old Belgian was recognized last year by the preeminent Dutch and Belgian musical awards. Nominated in both nations, he won the Belgian award for Rising Talent. Descamps recently began a stint as a host on Belgium's VT4 channel.

In "Judas Kiss," Descamps will play Shane Lyons, an amoral college senior who will do whatever it takes to win the love of film student Danny Reyes. The film tells the story of a disillusioned filmmaker's visit to his peculiar alma mater, where he is trapped in a tug of war between his tortured past and a troubling future.

Descamps' cross-Atlantic casting for the film was made possible by a combination of the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), Facebook and Skype, said "Judas Kiss" writer-producer Carlos Pedraza.

"I always play 'good' characters," Descamps said. "I'm happy for the challenge of playing someone different in an inspirational project like 'Judas Kiss.'"

Descamps made headlines in his home country last year when he came out as gay.

"Timo wanted to be on this project the instant he learned about 'Judas Kiss' on IMDb," Pedraza said. "We communicated via Facebook and Skype and had him shoot a screentest in the Netherlands with two scenes from the screenplay."

The digital audition impressed "Judas Kiss" director J.T. Tepnapa, who saw an opportunity to showcase Descamps' musical talent in the role of singer Shane Lyons.

"Timo showed us he has what it takes to play an unsavory character who has an entire campus twisted around his little finger," Tepnapa said. "You can't take your eyes off him."

"Judas Kiss" is Tepnapa's first feature film. He has won many international awards for his short films, including the multiple award-winning parody of 1950s teen health films, "Masturbation: Putting the Fun Into Self-Loving," the comedy "Drag Queen Heist" and the homeless youth drama, "Begging for Change."

Charlie David (left) and Brent Corrigan also star in 'Judas Kiss'

Descamps started acting in television at 17, starring in the Belgian soap opera "Family." At 19, he landed a leading role in the children's show, "Spring." A year later, he won third place in the Belgian celebrity singing contest, "Soapstar Superstar." On the heels of his musical success, he wrote and released his first single, "Phone Call."

He has dubbed voices in several European versions of Hollywood blockbusters, including "Happy Feet" (Mumble), "Surf's Up" (Cody), "The Chronicles of Narnia," (Peter Pevensie), and has hosted a show on Europe's Nickelodeon network called "Superstar: The Battle!"

Descamps currently stars as Dolf in the Dutch musical "Crusade in Jeans," and plays a South African student in the Dutch TV drama, "SpangaS." He just began hosting a kids' show on the Belgian network VT4.

"Judas Kiss" is being produced by Blue Seraph Productions, a Los Angeles company headed by Tepnapa and Pedraza. Their previous work has been featured in the New York Times, BBC, Variety, Frontiers, Fab magazine, the Today Show, MSNBC, and other international news outlets.

The film, scheduled to shoot this summer in Seattle, has already attracted attention for casting "Dante's Cove" star Charlie David (host of Logo's travel show, "Bump," and writer-star of the film, "Mulligans"). Also cast is controversial adult film star Brent Corrigan, who appeared in last year's Oscar-winning "Milk" and the comedy, "Another Gay Sequel."

VIEWS: If you don't like baloney, read this

I get sent stuff all the time: pictures, links, possible stories, latest discoveries -- and conspiracy theories, grand plots, and crazy "world changing" theorems. For the first bit, I'm appreciative. For the last bit, I never quite have all the time necessary to educate folks on critical thinking skills needed to navigate the pitfalls of putrid information.

It's not like I'm an expert on critical thinking, either. I get tripped up all the time. But I've always thought that since I love aliens, UFOs, the X-Files, magic, ESP and the like, it behooves me to at least try to figure out what's real and what is, really, just fiction. I love fiction. I write the shit for a living.

But with a sea of information coming at us from all directions, how do we sift out the misinformation and bogus claims, and get to the truth? Michael Shermer of Skeptic Magazine lays out a "Baloney Detection Kit," ten questions we should ask when someone - a site, a news story, a friend or one of a chain email -- makes a radical, incredible claim.

It's pretty simple, too. It involves asking yourself 10 questions about the claim, ten touchstones to help guide tease out the silliness from the sublime.  It's actually based on Carl Sagan's idea that "Extraordinary Claims require Extraordinary Evidence,"  a pretty simple idea when you think about it.

Here are the 10 Questions:

1. How reliable is the source of the claim?

2.Does the source make similar claims?

3. Have the claims been verified by somebody else?

4. Does this fit with the way the world works?

5. Has anyone tried to disprove the claim?

6. Where does the preponderance of evidence point?

7. Is the claimant playing by the rules of science?

8. Is the claimant providing positive evidence?

9. Does the new theory account for as many phenomena as the old theory?

10. Are personal beliefs driving the claim?

And here's Shermer himself to talk about this guide in more detail:

Critically thinking isn't easy. We simply aren't wired for it. We regard stories, personal anecdotes and  images of hot, naked guys as being more real than data, analysis, and ordinary folks talking about the latest counter-intuitive claim. But Science Fiction -- that genre we love so well -- is built on the greatest tool our kind has has ever invented: science. We owe it to ourselves to discover the reality of things so our imaginations can soar unencumbered by the prejudices of ignorance and idiocy.

THE HOTCAST: And the winner is...

Jason Momoa has been cast as Conan, Nikkie Finke reports. Marcus Nispel, the director of the film, was apparently a big supporter; he spent some time and money shooting test scenes with Momoa in full Conan mode. This helped cinch the role for the former STARGATE: ATLANTIS star.

Movie shoots March 15th in Bulgaria.

NEWS: Is it worth PUSHing if Chris Evans isn't there to help?

Flush with TWILIGHT cash, Summit Entertainment is creating a PUSH TV series. A bit of a HEROES knock-off, PUSH was about a world-wide group of psychics, telepaths and telekenetics hunted by a shadowy government organization.

About the only thing I can remember about the movie, before it went down under a series of bad reviews, were the pretty cool trailers, complete with flying debris, mind-battles, and Chris Evan's goatee

Still wasn't enough to get me out to the theater, though. When those lackluster reviews came in, I decided I'd catch in on cable. Chris Evans is great and all, but whatever I was doing that weekend was far more pressing than a movie-date.

Now, it looks like we might be getting a weekly return to the PUSH universe, as Summit starts pushing for a larger TV presence. The move to the small screen might not be that bad; the pilot is being written by David Hayter, who did the earnest, though a little cold, WATCHMEN movie.  He's also going to be exec producing. Summit's already lined up foreign and Canadian sales, so this is pretty much a done deal.

No casting news, but filling Evans' shirt is going to be a tough job.

MASS EFFECT 2: Maybe I should just rename the site "All MASS EFFECT, all the time"

I can't be the only one so obsessed, right? Right?

Here's the Official Launch trailer for next week's MASS EFFECT 2. I mean, you know, if you haven't seen any advertising, commentary, reviews, previews, or general "SQUEEE" comments from bloggers, announcers or gamers, gay or straight.

Like me.

Oh, and isn't that a pretty phallic gun in that screen shot above? I'm wondering what Sheppard is trying to prove.

REAL SCIENCE: Yeah, but have you seen those bonobos?
This is a fascinating talk by Susan Savage-Rumbaugh, an anthropologist studying the interplay between culture, social development and the creation of culture in non-human primates.

Everyone talks a lot about chimpanzees and their close relationship to us. But our other close cousin are bonobos; they, too, share 99% of the same genes as we do, with differences on that remaining 1% that are different in a different way than chimp DNA is from ours.

It's whatever in that 1% that makes up the obvious differences between us and chimps and bonobos. But in that remaining 99%, there's so much that gives rise to similar behaviors between all three species that it's stunning when you focus in on them.

The video below is of a recent TED presentation by Savage-Rumbaugh, as she notes how bonobo culture is remarkably like our own.

PREVIEWS: SMALLVILLE: ABSOLUTE JUSTICE

Okay, this actually looks cool. But it's SMALLVILLE. Will I be disappointed? Will it collapse under the weight of weak writing, acrid acting and general lunacy so common with this show, or am I going to cream my doorQyshorts?

Behold, the trailer for SMALLVILLE: ABSOLUTE JUSTICE, featuring the first ever TV look at the Justice Society of America.

VIDEO: ME 1 gets some gayness after all

Yeah, it's another MASS EFFECT post, but you'll like this one. I complained pretty bitterly about ME 1's lack of m/m romance options; BioWare is pretty good about spreading the love around but it was shameful that they didn't include that option -- due to developer "uncomfortableness" -- in ME 1. Though there's been lots of questioning about the upcoming MASS EFFECT 2, it still doesn't look like the male version of the main character is going to get to mac it down with any of the male teammates in the game.

But reality isn't an obstacle for determined game players, at least as far as MASS EFFECT 1 goes. One gaymer who goes by the name of lasangreal on YouTube, set out to do a little retconning of his own, altering game files and render mechanics to give the first epsiode in this fun game the gay romance option it rightly deserves. (Well, except for one brief moment, but you do what you can.)

Check it out, the Gay Romance From Mass Effect 1 you should have been able to see:

And in case you are interested, here's how the original scene played out:

VIEWS: Martin Luther King Jr. was a Trekkie

As we celebrate the momentous life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. today, and as many wonder if the gay community needs it's own MLK to finish the job of securing Gay Equality or if his inspiration alone is enough, I just wanted to point out that, among the many great things the man did and was, he was also a big fan of STAR TREK, and instrumental in getting Nichelle Nichols, Lt. Uhura, to stay on the show.

Here's an excerpt from Nichols recent interview with  journalist Savas Abadsidis where she explains how she made one of the most important choices of her life:

One of the organizers came up to me and said that there was someone who wants to meet you; and he says that he’s you’re best, biggest fan and I’m thinking it’s a Trekkie! [laughs] and so I said certainly and I got up and turned around and maybe 10 or 15 feet coming towards me I see Dr. Martin Luther King and I remember thinking whoever that little fan is, he’s going to have to wait, because here’s Dr. King, who walks straight up to me with this big, magnificent smile on his face and says, “I’m the fan!” because I’m sort of looking around for someone else, and he says, “I am your best fan, I am your biggest fan!” and I...I was at a loss for words, and if you know me, I am never at a loss for words.

I just couldn’t say a thing and he began to tell me how important my role was, what an inspiration it was. And you have to understand we were in the middle of the Civil Rights Movement, people were regularly being attacked by dogs, and marchers were being hosed on the television every night, real life things, and here I am in this futuristic thing on TV and he was so complimentary, he told me “I was so important and the way you have created this role,” and I am just looking at him and looking at him and I remember I just kept hoping he’d never stop talking. Because his voice is just, you know the voice. And I finally just start saying, thank you so much Dr. King and I am shaking his hand and still shaking from nervousness and I said thank you so much and I am really going to miss my co-stars.

And at this his face totally changed, and he said “What are you talking about?!” and so I told him I would be leaving the show, because [I'd been offered a Broadway show]; and that was as far as he let me go, and he said, “STOP! You cannot! Do you not understand what you are doing?! You are the first non-stereotypical role in television! Of intelligence, and of a woman and a woman of color?! That you are playing a role that is not about you’re color! That this role could be played by anyone? That’s not a black role. That’s not a female role! A blue eyed blond or a pointed ear green person could take that role!” And I am looking at him and looking at him and buzzing, and he said, “Nichelle, for the first time, not only our little children and people can look on and see themselves, but people who don’t look like us, people who don’t look like us, from all over the world, for the first time, the first time on television, they can see us, as we should be!

As intelligent, brilliant, people in roles other than slick tap dancers, and maids, which are all wonderful in their own ways, but for the first time we have a woman, a WOMAN, who represents us and not in menial jobs, and you PROVE it, this man [Gene Rodenberry] proves and establishes a precedent that validates what we are marching for because three hundred years from today there we are, and there you are, in all our glory and all your glory! And you CANNOT leave!”

And I did not leave.

NEWS: Jared Padalecki also up for CONAN: THE BARBARIAN?

JustJared reported that SUPERNATURAL star Jared Padalecki is also in the running to wear the skimpy loin-cloth for the updated CONAN: THE BARBARIAN movie.

If so, it might explain why no decision has been made on casting Kellan Lutz or Jason Momoa in the role: arguably, Padalecki is better known as the lead of a popular TV show, though both Lutz and Momoa have followings from their own (supporting) roles on TV and film.

Plus, Jared might look better all bronzed up and wielding a broadsword.

One sticking point on his acceptance of the role might be his impeding marriage to long-time girlfriend Genevieve Cortese; he'd been planning on a ceremony right around the same time CONAN is looking to start filming.

If he was gay, he wouldn't have this problem. He wouldn't be able to marry his beloved in California, so that'd keep his schedule open for filming.

VIDEO: Coolest thing I've seen today

Scion is a new doorQ.com member, who stumbled over us on YouTube. He's a 24-year-old Portuguese VFX artist, with some crazy cool videos on his YouTube  channel.

He was messing around the other night in AfterEffects and created a trailer for doorQ.com. It's really cool and it's gotta be one of the best member gifts the site's ever gotten.

MASS EFFECT 2: To Seek Out New Planets to Help You Kick Ass

My never-ending wait for MASS EFFECT 2 continues, with the days failing to roll over fast enough to bring the game into my hot little hands. It's really odd, too. As an adult, I have so much to do during the week that I don't want the days to pass -- it's the whole "Is it Wednesday already? I still haven't done that and that and that..."  But that geeky, doorQy part of me keeps looking at the calendar and doing a bit of impromptu math: "Okay, Friday is the 22nd and the game comes out on the 26th, so that's only four more days and weekend is right there so I won't even notice and..."

Yeah, it's tough being a doorQ, isn't it?

Getting me through have been all of these crazy fun videos, behind the scenes looks into the making of the game, the changes between the first RPG and this, the sequel, and even what the fan reactions are to what's in store. (Conclusion: Geeks bitch a lot. Over little things.)

One of the things that was both divine and disappointing about the original game was space exploration. As an RPG, you were in command of your space ship and while investigating the larger mystery at the heart of the story, you also had the ability to head off into lost corners of the galaxy and solve side missions and random quests. This usually involved taking a drop ship down to the planet, rummaging around in the equivalent of a space-tank (with jump jets! and cliff-hunging wheels!), running up on smuggler outposts, and blasting everything apart. And that was pretty much it.

Most of the side missions involved exploring the same stock outpost building -- one large main room, one backroom and one upstairs hide-a-way -- killing the same number of baddies, and walking away with the same amount of randomly distributed loot. It was fun the first few times, but by a few hours into the game, it got old. (Well, as old as blowing shit up ever gets.)

These side missions rarely intersected back with the main story of MASS EFFECT. It was fun... but, also got old at 3AM in them morning while exploring yet another alien planet that looked like the other twenty alien planets I explored. By the end, for the space missions, I thought the developers were secretly trying to provide the visit-the-same-rock-quary experience from all those planet side episodes of the original STAR TREK.

As the embedded developer diary notes, the team behind MASS EFFECT 2 went back to baseline for the planetary exploration aspects of the sequel. They're promising the planetside missions won't be random and disjointed, but will have a direct bearing on your success with the main plot. Plus, they'll be way more fun. Which, once again, has me going back to the calendar and doing that mental calculation.

"So today is the 18th and I have to grade these papers and write this outline and go meet up with this person and then that'll take me through the six days until the 26th...."

Is it the 26th yet?

NEWS: JOHN CARTER OF MARS begins filming

As a little proto-homo-doorQ teen, one of my favorite novel series was Edgar Rice Burrough's "John Carter of Mars." Today, the live action version of the film began principal photography. For those of you who never cracked this book, Civil War era soldier John Carter is scientifically / magically transported to the dying world of Mars, otherwise known as Barsoom to the various locals, and gets involved with political intrigue, alien romance and high adventure. The perfect stuff for a rainy Saturday afternoon.

JOHN CARTER OF MARS is being directed by Jim Morris, the famed animator / director of WALL*E. This isn't an animated movie, though. This is all live action. All amazing vistas realized through CGI. All actors tearing through the wounded Martian landscape. Given the magic of AVATAR, and of Morris' own WALL*E, I'm really curious to see how this turns out.

You've got Willam Dafoe in this asTars Tarkas, the fierce and powerful Martian Warrior, though you'd be forgiven for thinking that "fierce" and "powerful" are only properly used as adjectives for drag queens. Or Lady Gaga.  Tarkas is also green, 8 feet tall, sports four arms and big, bug like eyes.  Na'vi indeed, right?

John Carter is played by Taylor Kitsch, of FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS and X-MEN fame. Could they could have picked a better representation of my adolescent imagination's image of what a stalwart and heroic god is supposed to be than Kitsch-as-Carter? Don't really think so. It's a great choice for the movie... as long they don't frak things up.

Unfortunately, one thing they won't be doing, one thing that kept that proto-homo-doorQy-teen-imagination as equally engaged with visualization, is having Tars and Carter battle evil Martians in-the-buff.  Loin cloths for everyone this time out, unfortunately. Naked heroes? It was right there in Burrough's description terribly exciting for a horny, closeted 13 year-old: hot naked guys conquering an alien world rocked at that age.

Okay, it still does.

THE HOTCAST: Kellan Lutz and Jason Momoa battle for a loincloth

CONAN THE BARBARIAN is the latest property to get the reboot and there's conflicting news about who's up for the role. Robert E. Howard's buff, bronze-age barbarian -- well, really more of the "land before time" Hyboria, after Atlantis fell and before our modern history began -- previous played by the Governator, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

This time out, Conan is getting the big screen update treatment by former Marvel Comics head Avi Lerner. His Millennium Entertainment (which also holds the rights to a MASS EFFECT feature film) is gearing up for a March 15th production, once they decide on who'll inhabit Conan's loincloth.

Deadline Hollywood reports that it's down to TWILIGHT'S Kellan Lutz and STARGATE: ATLANTIS' Jason Momoa and a possible third, unknown actor.

Kellan Lutz confirmed to  Socialite Life that he's being considered for the role. Momoa hasn't said anything, but he is busy filming A GAME OF THRONES at the moment.  Big question is, who'll better fill out the loincloth, Lutz with his blue eyes and blond locks or Momoa with his ripped chest and fierce gaze?

HAITI: Sometimes I forget I have a great damn bunch of readers...

I was texting "Haiti" to 90999 this morning, contributing a small amount of money to the relief efforts in what's probably one of the worst natural disasters in decades, when I realized I have all of you readers and members out there. Several thousand, according to various meters.

So if you haven't had a chance yet, take a moment and donate something, the cost of a comic, a ticket to film, even if it's just what you'd spend for a Coke in the soda machine, and help our relief efforts in dealing with the tragedy down there. I just did the 90999 SMS message, sending "Haiti" and $10 bucks to The Red Cross' relief efforts.  I'm going to donate a few more bucks, once I'm assured that Visa or Amex isn't going to take a cut of the money. I'm hoping you guys will, too.

Here's a link to the Red Cross.

PREVIEWS: What's DOCTOR WHO's Matt Smith like?

We all know Matt Smith is cute. The joke going around is "Is the new DOCTOR WHO a twink?" Your definition of "twinkness" may vary, and it is a fun question, but the real impetus behind such questions is trying to predict what this guy is going to be like week to week zipping through time and space.

Here's one more piece for you for your predictions, a recent interview with Smith about a short film that premiered at Cannes this past summer.

Charming guy, I think. He's does have charisma and charm. I can't see him as a "twink", though. He's young, yes, but he's not Randy Harrison or Charlie Hunnam in the first season of QUEER AS FOLK. Smith is going to bring a different flavor to the show, especially if his "Geronimo" line is considered. We'll know shortly. The new season of WHO premieres in the Spring.

TALKBACK: Who should be the new Peter Parker?

SPIDER-MAN 4 got squashed yesterday, with Sony pulling the plug on the Sam Raimi / Tobey Maguire sequel to the hot franchise. There were lots of script problems and creative differences, so much so that Raimi said he couldn't meet the 2011 opening date. Sony bascially said "fine, we'll just reboot" and that's what they are doing, jettisoning the entire cast and director and relaunching the movie series in 2012 with Peter Parker back in highschool.

There's a lot of talk that the reboot had been planned all along; with the success of TWILIGHT and the cost of the team behind the current take on the franchise increasing, Sony had already commissioned a teen Spidey / Ultimate Spidey type script. The success of AVATAR has also led to the studio considering a 3D version of the movie.

I'll leave it to you to decide if this is a good idea or not. Raimi worked wonders with SPIDER-MAN 1 & 2, failing only with the increased pressure from Sony on SPIDER-MAN 3. A 3D / Teen version of the franchise could do even better business than any of the prior movies, even if it's written by hacks and directed by the clueless. Hollywood isn't about quality, only profits.

Be that as it may, who do you think should be the new Spidey? Should it be typical A-Listers like Zac Efron or Taylor Lauter....

....slightly more believable up-and-comers like Ryan Kelly (PRAYERS FOR BOBBY, BEN X) or Logan Lerman (PERCEY JACKSON)..

..

Or some unknown that can be signed for $100,000 and blamed if things suck? (*Cough* Brandon Routh *Cough*)

What say you?

IMAGES: "Between colored light and darkness...."

Exterface are two 24-year-old French artists, Julien and Stéphane, who create some pretty wild imagery, especially of  he male form - its desires and meanings.

By their own account, they attempt to manipulate the images of various guys "... exposing them, stripping them until they are lost between coloured light and darkness."

They recently did a super-hero themed photo shoot entitled "Superlover: The Seduction of Power." It's quite a trip, too, with energy blasts, vibrant, skin tight outfits and lots of smoldering sexuality.

Check out the rest of the series at the link below, then tool around their site for more of their work. Note, there are a few dicks in their stuff, so you might want to wait until you get home from work.

NEWS: THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN to shoot in Fall?

If you thought this year would be quiet on the TWILIGHT front, think again. Wyck Godfrey, producer for the series, told the LA Times that the third -- and last -- movie in the THE TWILIGHT SAGA could start lensing in the fall.

Why the uncertainty, though? It's not so much about the controversial nature of the plot -- the heroine gives birth to the heroes' half-vampire baby, which grows to maturity super-fast and then falls in love with Taylor Lautner's shirtless werewolf -- but rather if they're making one movie or two. "Breaking Dawn" is the longest of the books. There's ample story there for two films, so the current decision is whether to cram everything into one movie or split it apart in two.

Hmmm. Let's do a little prognostication, shall we? One movie: one shitload amount of money from box-office, VOD, DVDs and merchandising. Two movies: two shitloads of money from box-office, VOD, DVDs and merchandising. Which would you choose?

NEWS: Less really isn't more

NBC has downsized DAY ONE -- again.

The Jesse Alexander (HEROES) produced scifi series about an alien invasion was originally conceived as a 12-episode TV series. Then, after NBC decided that a slow suicide of their prime-time schedule was more preferable to creating a good, ratings-wining one, cut the show to a two night mini-series, with talk that it could roll into a full series if the ratings warranted.

Now comes word that the hour long pilot -- for that's all they've let be shot -- will be stretched into a two hour stand-alone movie, with a set though somewhat open ending, allowing for a further TV series.

I'd actually believe there was some faith in the potential of the show if the network hadn't cut the series so often, mentioned they thought it might be too smart for their audience, and still haven't given it a slot on their schedule.

This one is pretty much toast, folks.

THE FUTURE: Prop 8 Gay Marriage Trial

Hey, folks. Quick little FYI.

The Federal Court is hearing arguments over the constitutionality of Proposition 8, the law that removed the right for gay people to get married. The YouTube recordings of the proceedings were blocked by the US Supreme Court while they have time to review the law, so there's no visual record of what's going on. But, through the power of Twitter and blogs, you can keep up with the blow-by-blow of the trial on-line.

NEWS: What's THE PLAN on Sunday?

This Sunday, SyFy airs BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: THE PLAN, the prequelish movie chronicling what those pesky Toasters were doing while the fleet jumped from one divinely ordain misadventure after another. But is it any good?

Seems strange to ask that about BSG, but after the last hour of the show, some do wonder if it's worth investing any more of their precious time on the voyages of the starship Galactica. (I'm of the position that CAPRICA is going to be fun, but that's another post.)

I think it's best to be a completist about these things. I was there from those first trepidation filled moments of the miniseries to the last light of the little dancing Sony robot intoning our oncoming cyber doom. So I'll watch it, even though the reviews aren't all that great.

IMAGES: DEMONS possession

In honor of DEMONS getting the best  debut of any series of on BBC America -- which might have something to do with the Tennant DOCTOR WHO episodes getting the best ratings ever for BBCA -- I give you more images of Christian Cooke, the quite bewitching lead of the show. I've pulled them from gallery Superherofan.Com's gallery devoted to him.

I'm not really spoiling anything to tell you that there's only one season of DEMONS. The series didn't do well enough to earn a second batch of episodes -- which, if you watched the pilot, isn't that surprising. These are the only shirtless adventures of Cooke we'll get. But, he has moved on to another series, a sudsers called TRINITY, which is fortunate for us, as he takes even more off in that show, as the image below reveals.

Check out the rest of the images at the link. The second episode of DEMONS airs tonight at 10PM on BBCA.

COMICS: Hot Iron

After being the tough antagonist on the Civil War story arc and going underground with the Dark Reign storyline,  IRON MAN is getting a reboot -- literally -- in the pages of the comics. As part of that revamp, Marvel has released this image of the new armor Tony's going to be sporting, right around the time IRON MAN 2 hits movie screens this summer.

Amazing how the comics' IRON MAN revamps his suit at the same time his movie counterpart is....

It's a newer, sleeker, more techno-savy version, something series writer Matt Fraction says Tony Stark would "covet." He's not the only one. I know it's only a comic and only a movie, but I'd really prefer to commute to work in red and gold Power Armor than my convertible Mustang.  And I love my Mustang.

NEWS: John Barrowman accepts defeat... cheekily

As was pointed out the other day, John Barrowman lost AfterElton's "Gay Man of the Decade" competition to Neil Patrick Harris, I think much to the disappointment of many readers here. But showing what a class act he is, Barrowman issued the following concession to Harris:

Congratulations Neil! I’m happy to be under you at number two, and I’m really pleased we generated so much interest in the poll. I think we've proved that The Timelords have nothing on Captain Jack and Dr. Horrible – We are the‘gay-lords of the decade.’

I’m also hoping there is an award of some kind for the honor. Even though I didn't win, if it’s a two sided trophy given how much fun we've had during the past few days, maybe you’ll share with me.

You were a worthy opponent, Neil, and I’d be happy to cross swords with you again in the future.

My Love and Submission.
Best,
JB
I have a lot to learn about accepting defeat.

REVIEWS: DAYBREAKERS comes with the dawn

January is typically the month of frosty weather and frozen films, cinema so bad that no even the SyFy Channel will touch it. So you'd be forgiven for thinking that, DAYBREAKERS, the new vampire film staring Ethan Hawke and directed by The Spierig Brothers, would fit that bill.

It's looking that might not be the case. Many geeky, genre-y viewers who've seen the film have enjoyed the movie, giving it good marks for a B-movie.

The Quiet Earth:   Daybreakers may not be a perfect package but it’s one that has a lot more going for it than simply good looks. There’s heart and soul here and the Spierig Brothers' attempt to make a film that is both entertaining and thought provoking is successful. This duo is on their way to big things.

Film.comOnce again the Spierigs took a limited budget and crafted many of the visual shots themselves at home on their computers, though you would never know it from the quality you see on screen. These brothers are masters of low-budget genre direction and digital SFX. In the true spirit of indie genre filmmaking, they let their story and actors carry along the plot, but supplement it with just the right amount of visual odyssey to transport you to a world you've never before quite imagined. There is nothing to complain about here. Nothing. Solid all the way through, Daybreakers delivers again and again on the scares, thrills, and chills.

Rolling Stone:  Highbrows will condescend to this movie like nobody's business. But there are a few of us left out there -- junkies for smart exploitation -- who will relish this stuff. You know who you are.

Overall, the film's sporting a 61% at Rotten Tomatoes, which is pretty good. Not everyone loves it -- Roger Ebert gave it a pass -- but it sounds like it should be bloody good fun.

Coming soon to a theater near you: G.I. JOE 2.

According to Collider.Com, G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA made $300 million world-wide, making it a very profitable movie for Paramount.  With all of the original actors signed for sequels, and since most all of them were cheap-cheap-cheap, it's pretty like this movie will get the full green light treatment.

Interestingly, the writers for the sequel are Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the guys behind the recent ZOMBIELAND film. It was also announced today that they are writing DEADPOOL, for Ryan "I have abs of death" Reynolds.

Reese and Wernick are in for a busy 2010. I hate them.

NEWS: Doctor Horrible or Captain Jack? [UPDATED with the winner]

So, who do you want on top, Neil Patrick Harris or John Barrowman?

There's currently a battle raging between Mondo Mos for the title of Greatest Mo of The Century.... well, actually, it's a competition between Harris and Barrowman for AfterElton’s Man of the Decade title. I liked my title better.

The voting, like the candidates, has been hot and heavy, involving fans and celebs on either side of the pond. Over here, backing Harris, Nathan Fillion, Alyson Hannigan and Jimmy Fallon have been motivating their fans and twitter friends to vote for that horrible Doctor.

Across the pond, Neil Gaiman and Jonathan Ross have weighed in with their legion of supporters, getting folks to vote for Barrowman and to follow all of the shenanigans over twitter, at  #biggaybattle.

But the real question is where do you fall? Do you want the hunktastic Barrowman, singer of songs ans slayer of Daleks, to capture the top spot or do you want the golden goodness of Harris, he of Howser fame and internet geekdom, to surge all the way to victory? Make your voice known  here.

The choice, my dear doorQs, is yours....

And the winner is.... Neil Patrick Harris, 61% to 32%. Feel free to discuss below.

VIDEO: George Lucas on THE DAILY SHOW

STAR WARS maestro George Lucas did a round with John Stewart, discussing his love of films and his legacy with that franchise that many of us wish he'd stopped working on after RETURN.

Interestingly, he notes that there are three generations of SW fans, those who came of age watching the original trilogy, those who encountered the sequel films first and those who now have THE CLONE WARS as their entry point in the SW universe. He states that every group claims their own movies or TV shows as being "the best" and tend to regard the other series as not quite as good.

And, you know, I'm willing to grant Lucas that point. I teach First and Second in an after-school program two days out of the week. Their love for CLONE WARS is incredible. From backpacks to playground play, everything is about clones, Jedi and evil robots. It's pretty amazing to behold. I'll also be honest and say that I watch CLONE WARS every week. I found the movie that came out last year tiresome and boring, but in 18 minute animated chunks it's really pretty fun.

No, story and character wise, CLONE WARS isn't better than the original trilogy -- it isn't even better than the sequel set. Episodes 1, 2, and 3, aren't consistently better than 4,5 and 6. While parts are good, and 3 is a far better movie than 1, they still aren't as well written as the first three. But I will say that all the series are really fun, really an experience that does transport you to another world and another time, even if you think, as I do, that there are better encounters with that time and space than others.

For a lot of people, JJ Abrams Trek is their TREK. Davies' DOCTOR WHO is their WHO and the current iteration of V is the only one they've ever known. I can argue why one version might be structurally or thematically better than another, but in terms of enjoyment and the ownership of that enjoyment, such statements fall pretty flat.

THE HOTCAST: Kevin Alejandro joins TRUE BLOOD

Lafayette is getting a love.

Kevin Alejandro is joining the cast of TRUE BLOOD,  GregInHollywood.Com reports. Alejandro will play Jesus Velasques, an orderly and son of Alfre Woodward's Ruby Jean Reynolds. Alejandro was last seen -- if you can call an NBC series cancelled before the ordered second season ever aired -- in the police procedural SOUTHLAND.*

He's got a good SF pedigree, having also appeared in GEMINI DIVISION, KNIGHT RIDER and ELEVENTH HOUR.  Greg reports he's going to be in just about every episode of TRUE BLOOD, so I imagine we'll get to know him very well.

*True, the second series was picked up by TNT, but still.....

MASS EFFECT 2: Villains wind up in the most unlikeliest of places...

My MASS EFFECT 2 obsession continues.

(It'll end on the 26th when the game comes out. Deal until then.)

Here's the Gamestop trailer for the game, showing off what special fate befalls the badguys.

It's funny. Trust me.

NEWS: AVATAR Earns $1Billion World-Wide

Now you have to call him "King of the Universe."

James Cameron's beautiful, if a bit hackneyed, 3D-opus AVATAR crossed the $1billion dollar mark this weekend. That's totaling the world-wide gross from all theaters playing the film.

True, adjusted for inflation and considering 3D tickets cost twice as much as regular theater tickets puts that number in perspective, it's still a pretty impressive number, especially in light of the global recession. But this was also a non-franchise film, a brand new property that no one had ever heard of before. Despite whatever short comings the story has, AVATAR has been able to put butts-in-seats week in and week out.

If there was any doubt about the viability of 3D filmmaking to be the "Next Big Thing", I think this film has put such doubts to bed. Production costs of 3D films are still high but they are falling; we are soon going to see more and more efforts by the studios to repeat the success of this film.

PREVIEWS: DEMONS starts tonight

A friend sent me a quick reminder that DEMONS, the hunky-male, English take on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, gets underway tonight, after the final episode of WHO.

About a young man who learns he's the last descendant of Van Helsing, the famous vampire hunter, he spends the next 13 weeks slaying all manner of supernatural beasties. Shirtless.

Christian Cooke stars as the young, buff hero.

Here's a preview:

Demons premieres at 10PM and 1AM on BBCA. (thanks Eric!)

REMINDER: THE END OF TIME ends Tonight!

DOCTOR WHO: THE END OF TIME Part Two airs tonight on BBCA. I caught it last night and it's a fun and sad conclusion to David Tennant's run as you know who.

Much of the plot is rather "light" -- it rolls briskly from point to point, satisfactorily if not impressively -- but the character moments truly sing, bringing a tear to the eye. The last 20 minutes are pretty much all character. It's what saves the show and makes it truly great.

There are many things to watch out for in this episode, homages to other shows, a certain name that comes out of left-field and makes you go "Shit!" and a cause that had a terrible effect on all of Time. I think you'll also enjoy the last five minutes, too. It bodes well for the future.

Speaking of the future, if you are interesting in sneaking a peak at Matt Smith's take on the good Doctor, I've embedded a trailer for the new spring episodes of DOCTOR WHO. Moffat is a great successor to Davies and Smith looks like he's going to do fine in the roll.

TRAILERS: STAR BLAZERS makes me feel 8 again...

In fifth grade, I used to anxiously ride the school bus to my grandmother's home, entreating the gods to end the journey swiftly. It wasn't because I was being bullied, bothered or otherwise tormented on the ride, rather it was because Deslok was attacking and I had to be there to fight along with the STAR BLAZERS.

Remember them? It was the first anime series to have a huge impact on the hearts and minds of young geeks and doorQs (like me), opening them (me) up to the wonders of Japanamation -- and epic story telling.

So when  I saw the trailer below, I squeed like I was 8 again. It's a trailer for the live action version of STAR BLAZERS.  Wildstar, the Yamato, the Wave Motion Gun. It all looks gloriously fun.

The film is due out in 2010.
