| NEWS: Harry Potter enlists with Captain Janeway. |
Kate Mulgrew is joining the Broadway production of "Equus," which stars HARRY POTTER's Daniel Radcliffe. "Equus" is the Peter Shaffer play about a disturbed young man who blinds a stable of horses after a particularly unsettling event.
The play has been a career (re)defining role for Radcliffe. The nudity, swearing, smoking and sheer acting skill displayed by the young actor has moved him out of the "lucky kid" category and into the ranks of serious acting. Mulgrew is well known for her role as Captain Janeway on VOYAGER. She also has a long career as a stage actress, winning awards for her performances in "Iphigenia 2.0", "Tea at Five" and "Our Leading Lady." | NEWS: MASTERS OF SCIENCE FICTION to DVD. |
DVD Publisher Anchor Bay is releasing a 2 disk DVD set of MASTERS OF SCIENCE FICTION, the Anthology series that briefly aired on ABC last year. With stories from such notables Harlan Ellison and Robert A. Heinlein, the DVDs also contain the never aired episodes from the series, featuring stories by Walter Mosley and Richard Sheckley.
MASTERS was pretty scuttled by ABC before it even aired. It was given next to no promotion, support or enthusiasm by that network's Powers That Be. While not every episode is perfect, there were enough of them -- especially Ellison's -- that made for great dramatic TV. They were also thought-provoking to boot, the point of scifi but something hard for the average non-cable TV exec to understand.
The DVD arrives August 5th. |

| NEWS: What's better than chain-sawing a videogame alien? |
Chain-sawing a movie one. Len Wiseman, monster director behind the UNDERWORLD franchise of Vampires vs. Werewolves, has signed on to bring GEARS OF WAR, the uber successful video game to the big screen. GEARS is about the war for survival between human colonists on a distant planet and the alien race, the Locust, planetary natives who lives deep below ground, who are on the verge of wiping them out. One iconic feature of the video game are the "chainsaw bayonets" that allow players to shred the alien Locust gut to gob. No word if that will make the translation to the big screen. GEARS OF WAR 2, the sequel to the first game, hits shelves later this year. Source: Scifi Wire Chainsaw Destruction Below: |

SciFi Channel has, quietly and without muss fuss, moved CHARLIE JADE, the Canadian/South African parallel universe detective yarn, to 3AM Mondays. JADE originally occupied the 8PM Friday prime spot on their schedule. Apparently ratings are an issue, with the series never quite measuring up to their hopes.

| NEWS: Destruction in Dallas As FedCon Implodes After One Day |
FedCon USA, the Dallas the spinoff of the highly successful FedCon Germany convention experience, blew up over the weekend. After less than 24 hours, in the middle of a Question and Answer session with visiting talent, the plug was pulled on the entire event, leaving people out cash and time, and talent highly, highly pissed. The event was organized by Tim Brazeal who gained a great deal of notoriety several years ago through his efforts to "save" STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE, through supposedly raising several million dollars from fans and enlisting the aide of a Canadian production company, negotiating with Paramount for a co-production deal. It was eventually revealed that Tims statement's were false: the money was merely pledged from fans, there was no Canadian company, and the negotiations with Paramount amounted to an after-hours phone call with a tired executive who made the mistake of answering his phone.
Currently, there are rounds and rounds of accusations and recriminations being flung on the FedCon:Dallas forums. It's come to light that Brazeal didn't have the full backing of the parent FedCon, they'd pulled their support, but not their name, earlier this year. Aaron Douglas , Chief Tyrol on BSG, had endless promises made and pulled to him by the FedCon staff -- the poor guy was standing in the airport on Friday night waiting for a ticket to arrive to get him to the event but it never came. James Callis, Baltar on BSG is also highly peeved at the German FedCon organization for failing to disclose their doubts.
The one hands down hero in all of this is John Billingsley, who played Doctor Flox on ENTERPRISE. To an attendee, he and his wife were described as going out of their way to show fans an excellent time, to get to the bottom of problems at the event, and to take an initiative of helping guests to get their money back.
It seems that while Trek can breed overzealous self-promotors it also gives us fantastic heroes as well.

| NEWS: DOCTOR WHO conquers (The) New York (Times) |
The New York Times takes on WHO's Russell T Davies in a rather cool article. Here's an excerpt: RUSSELL T DAVIES, perhaps the most admired writer and producer working in British television drama, was once confronted at a wedding by a fellow guest bristling with indignation about a scene in Mr. Davies's hugely successful, family-friendly science fiction series, "Doctor Who." In the scene Capt. Jack Harkness, a swaggering intergalactic hero who exuberantly lusts after both men and women, plants quick kisses on the mouths of both the title character and the title character's female sidekick as they face imminent death. (Everyone survives.)
Mr. Davies's first instinct - as a reasonable person, as a happily gay man - was to be relaxed and placatory, he said. But something snapped.
"I was standing there saying, ‘You're a bad mother, and your children will either grow up to be lesbians, or they will be taken into care because they've been badly raised,' " he recalled in a recent interview near the "Doctor Who" set. He began to chuckle. " ‘You are ignorant, and you're bringing up your children in ignorance, and that will backfire on you.' " Additionally, it's been announced that Davies will receive an OBE from the Queen later this year. An "OBE" is one of the highest civilian honors that the government can bestow. |
