Ever since the original V TV miniseries hit the airwaves in 1983 (you can trust me, I was there ;-P), the letter v has been working it’s way up the ladder in popularity. After all, before that, all v real ly had to its name was V-Day and a crappy holiday where you try to see how many cavities you can give the object of your affection in one day. It’s had some pretty stiff competition, though. A-F have always seemed to be pretty popular in the school grading system, while N and Y have made their fame through surveys. The most notorious letter of all, though, has to be X. After all, everything is cooler with an X! As mentioned before, the letter v seems to be gaining more and more popularity. It helped spawn two V miniseries in the early 80s, followed by a TV show in the mid 80s and around the same time, V for Vendetta was being published. Our little friend v took a break in the 90s, but has come back in full force here in the new millennium! It has been featured as the drug of choice in the steamy HBO series True Blood, spawned a V for Vendetta movie and has revived V as a new TV series on ABC. (Take that X!) With V being the most recent recent, let’s go ahead and take a closer look at that, shall we? Since the news of the series being rebooted, I’ve noticed G4 and SyFy have been playing reruns from the 80s incarnations of the show. I’ve managed to catch a few with my mom and sister and actually quite enjoyed it, even though half of the sound effects and sets looked like they were taken right out of a Star Wars movie =) We all sat down and watched the series reboot on ABC last night, and I will say that I enjoyed it. It wasn’t quite as suspenseful as the original, and a few of my friends seemed to be complaining that they just threw everything at you in that first episode and took all of the mystery out of it. While this is true, I can see why they did it. Since it’s a reboot of an old show, and this is the age of the internet, it would be quite easy for someone to Google it and know that the Visitors are actually evil alien lizards disguised as pretty people. My guess is that they’re throwing everything that the old show provided at us in the beginning, and will start introducing delicious new little twists and mysteries for us as the season develops. It’s quite possible that I’m being overly optimistic, but I really can’t help it. Turning the show on and seeing some of my favorite faces from Firefly and Lost just made me really want to like it, you know? My sister seemed most excited to see Alan Tudyk and even yelled, “She just ripped half of Wash’s face off!” during the climax of the episode ^_^ Speaking of Alan Tudyk, have I mentioned that this show is filled with enough pretty mens (yes, mens) to keep just about anyone happy? It features Joel Gretsch as Father McHunkypants, Logan Huffman as Rebellious Twinkerson, Scott Wolf as Naughty Reporter, Morris Chestnut, as Action Stud and Christopher Shyer as Evil Is'Sexy. (On a side note, they seemed to have cast Lourdes Benedicto to play Halle Berry's long lost twin sister.) I give the episode 3 ½ lizard faces out of 5 and think this will definitely be a show to keep an eye on. I know I’ll be tuning in every Tuesday to see what those crazy V kids are doing this week! What with their snazzy new jackets and cans of spray paint... This blog has been brought to you by the letter v. (And it's Sesame Street's 40th birthday! Yay!) |
