EVP Mark Stern sat down with TV Guide this week to talk about the upcoming gay characters on their network. We already knew that STARGATE: UNIVERSE's Camile Ray (played by Ming-Na) is an open lesbian on the series, complete with girlfriend back home, but apparently there are a few more folks into the same-sex lovin' lurking around the shadows of SyFy's universe.
What's new is that CAPRICA is also having a bevy of Mo's in Space, one of which, as
AfterElton.com points out, we've already met. Michael Jensen argues that Sasha Roiz, who plays Commander Adama's uncle --- and Tauron gang member -- on the series is gay.
His evidence is Stern's comment that "... there is a 'goodfella'-type [gay character], and we discover in a nonchalant way that he is gay, with a husband....It was very interesting to me to take what is traditionally a very heterosexual role in an organization that we think of as being extremely homophobic, and put a gay character in that world in a very normalized way."
I'm hoping that's true, as it would make for a fairly interesting spin on the character. As usual, I'm always concerned we'll just get some kind of background player that will show up for a while, be gay, then leave.
The article also makes mention that another character on the series will be part of a "group marriage" that involves homo- and hetero- couplings. That would really be a first for a prime time TV series -- and it would also be very science-fictiony.
Well know how all of this plays out shortly. SG:U premieres in October and CAPRICA in January.
